The Secret Life of Salvador Dalí
By Salvador Dali

The Secret Life of Salvador Dali
DASA Editions, 2000
ISBN: B25372/2000
Paperback
£15.00

This book exposes the enigma of Dalí's symbolism, and lets you in on his strange world giving an interesting version of his experiences early on in his life. Although not a completely accurate record of Dalí's life and times, this lively and colourful book provides Dalí's own views on his early works, his own surreal perceptions of the events of his life, and his creative process. The pages are littered with his fascinating drawings, paintings, and photographs, as you discover Dalí's account of things that have come to pass. You will also find Dalí conveying his obsession with dreams and Freudian analysis, his passion for his love and muse Gala, and his criticism of modern art and modern artists. Dalí’s unique qualities are all here, humour, cruelty, brilliance, and fanaticism, a great self-portrait by a brilliant eccentric artist.

"One day Salvador Dalí entered a New York bookstore and asked for a copy of his book, The Secret Life of Salvador Dalí. The young clerk, recognising his distinguished customer, promptly fetched the book and began to wrap it.

"Have you read it?" the artist asked. "No, I'm afraid not," the clerk replied, handing over the package. "Take it," Dalí said, passing it back across the counter. "It is my gift to you. Would you like me to autograph it for you?" "Of course," the clerk replied, excitedly tearing open the package and handing Dalí a pen...

Only after the artist had left the store did the clerk realise that he had forgotten a minor detail: Dalí had neglected to pay for the book!
