For
the first time in the United Kingdom, an art exhibition that articulates
freedom.
County Hall Gallery presents 55 inspired works
by a host of international artists moved by the UN
Declaration of Human Rights in Visions of Freedom
- an exhibition art that combines a unique collection of artwork with
a visual multimedia display of the original
Declaration text. The effect is a stirring collection of artworks illustrating
the very words the United Nations uses to define human rights today.
With
each of the 30 Declaration articles displayed in English, Spanish,
French, Arabic,
German, Russian,
Italian, Mandarin
and Braille, Visions of Freedom is no ordinary exhibition.
Visions
of Freedom embodies the concept that the global need for recognition
of human rights is as vital now as 1948, when Rene Cassin first presented
the Declaration of Human Rights to the United Nations.
The
Exhibition,
originally showed in Paris a decade ago in association with UNESCO,
is a renewal of the conviction that the issue of human rights is critical
to the survival of
our world. County Hall Gallery will donate 50% of revenue from ticket
sales to United Nations projects supporting human rights.
The
original concept
for the exhibition came from André Malraux and Leopold Senghor
in 1973, with the intention of creating a visual catalogue of the Declaration
of Human Rights. The Exhibition was finally brought to fruition by Joseph
Beuys and showed in 1991 for the first time at the Musee des Civilisations
Noires in Paris
as Memoire de la Liberte with the support of UNESCO.
Twelve
years later, County Hall Gallery in association with Fondazione Ambrosiana
brings the exhibition to London for the first time as Visions
of Freedom, incorporating a strong visual element with multimedia
displays as well as cultural comments from influential voices in contemporary
social opinion.
